2020 district prizewinners: Due to circumstances of 2020 your prize cheques have been delayed. It is anticipated that some winners may have new address since February, and in a few cases we have not yet received SIN numbers for winners (in which case we cannot distribute a cash prize and you need to contact us to discuss alternative arrangements). We hope cheques are sent before the end of the year. If you have a new address or have not yet gotten your SIN number to us, please email the contest Director, Robert.Craigen@umanitoba.ca.

2021 MMC REGISTRATION

The 2021 MMC will be held as usual simultaneously with the Waterly Pascal/Cayley/Fermat contests.
The specific conditions for writing in 2021 and the treatment of results will depend on the state of COVID lockdowns in schools across Manitoba at the time and provincial health policy. More will be spelled out in the mail invitation which should arrive in schools sometime in December.

To register you will require the registration code, which is mailed or emailed to contest managers at each school.

NEWS & NOTES:

The University of Manitoba offers a $1000 tuition remission to any of the top four-ranking Manitoba students who subsequently register for studies at UM.
Brandon University offers a $1000 scholarship to the top-ranking student in the MMC who subsequently enrolls there.
In 2019 there were no French papers requested and so a French-language version of the contest was not prepared. A scholarhip offered to the top French language paper in the MMC at St. Boniface University has been discontinued because of lack of candidates. We again encourage French-immersion and Francophone schools to register their students to write in their language of instruction. Please let us know if we can provide your school with any further resources of encouragement to this end; it would be a shame for the French version of this important provincial test to fade from memory and all our Francophone and immersion students lose this opportunity. (**) About the team rankings:

Rankings for ONLY the top group of perhaps 5 schools are published here. Each school's rank is reported to them privately along with student scores.

Each Manitoba school receives their in-Manitoba ranking with their scores.
Other schools receive their global (i.e., among both Manitoba and non-Manitoba participating schools) ranking with their scores.
Rankings reported here are global; if a Manitoba student or school's in-Manitoba ranking differs, it is given in parentheses.
When non-Manitoba students rank in the top 5 sufficiently many are listed to show the top 5 Manitoba students.

There are two approaches to ranking teams. Both are being used on a trial basis (feedback of any type is welcome). They are as follows:

1. The top 3 scores from each school are added to form a "team score". If fewer than 3 students write, "phantom" scores of 0 can be included to make up a "top 3" total (conceivably a school with two very high-scoring students may achieve a high ranking relative to schools having a team of 3 in which only one achieves a high score) or alternatively such teams may be left unranked.

2. The second method is used in some university competitions: Only schools in which at least 3 students participate are ranked. The ranks of the top three students from each such school are added, and schools ranked according to these sums (the lowest sum corresponds to the top rank, etc.). Ties may be broken by consideration of 4th place students in each school, etc.
