Comments on the exercises, Linear Transformations
  1. (Section 1.8)
Questions 1-10 are conceptual exercises on the definitions. You will have to read the text for the meaning of 'domain' and 'codomain'. You probably don't need to write down solutions: just make sure that you understand what the answers are! Questions 11-20 are various exercises on finding and using the matrix of a linear transformation. This is the key topic of this section! 21-24 are a different kind of exercise, of a kind we like to ask. Make sure that you understand how to answer 23/24. 25-26 are two easy but important tests of your understanding of the definitions. 27-31 test your understanding of the method of proof of the key Theorem 1.8.2.
We have already done the proof questions.
Make sure that you know and understand all the answers to the True/False questions.
    Focus questions: 16, 18, 24, 28, 29.
  2. (Section 4.9)
Have you memorized all the examples well enough so that you can answer 1-19 without referring to the text?
    21-24 are good basic exercises.
I got carried away in the following: 25-38 should have read '25-32' exploring increasingly complicated kinds of geometric transformations. You should be prepared to answer a similar kind of question on an exam. 40 is also a good exercise.
Focus questions: It's hard to make a selection here; no one exercise is more important than another; and it is important for you to do as many as possible. Let's take 12, 16, 18, 22, 26, 28, 31, 34(omit 34) as a representative sampling.
