Harold Simmons on "Idioms, nuclei, and ranks: Analyzing the complexity of objects in certain familiar categories"
(* This is not Harold's title for this work!)
Abstract:

Based on some quite informal discussions with Harold Simmons of the University of Manchester this summer, I will give an even more informal overview of some work that HArold has been doing in lattice theory and category theory. He has a general scheme, involving things called 'idioms' and 'nuclei' (and many others besides) which unites various dimension functions from module theory (Gabriel, Boyle, etc); dimensions from category theory; and things like the Cantor-Bendixson rank from topology; with all the computations occuring in a purely lattice-theoretic setting.

If there is sufficient interest, I will give more lectures on this in the future---or even better, we may be able to convince Harold to come to Winnipeg next spring sometime to give us a "mini-course".
