Here we give new first order proofs of group embeddability of cancellative semigroups satisfying certain semigroup laws discovered and popularized by the late Professor B.H. Neumann in a recent issue of the Canadian Math Bulletin. In fact, this was his last paper and he wrote this after visiting the University of Manitoba in 1999.
