Every group is the fundamental group of a 2-complex. So group-theoretical properties can be rendered into properties of complexes, and hence approached at that level. I will illustrate how the link works through some examples, ranging from relatively simple theorems through deeper results, to open problems.

This is a colloquium-style lecture with many illustrations. Everything will be defined and anyone could follow.
