Group Laws over Infinite Fields
(Report on the NSERC Summer Research Project of Roger Woodford)

Abstract:

In this project, we find all rational group laws definable over infinite fields. Up to birational equivalence, there are only two such group laws and they are both linear. This is a special case of the well-known characterization of one-dimensional groups: they are addition, multiplication and the group law on an elliptic curves.
