The inspiration for this talk is an old (but not forgotten) paper of O.Ore on non-commutative polynomials. I will start with a few basic computational properties for differential operators with rational coefficients.The decomposition theorems given in the second part of Ore's article will provide me with powerful tools for describing the injective envelope of a simple left module over K(X) [Y,d/dX].
