Abstract: The purpose of the talk is to present an elementary proof of the theorem of Martha Smith on the existence of finitely generated algebras of intermediate growth. We are also planning to show that the same method of proof gives an new and easier version of the example of Borho and Kraft for algebras with Gelfand-Kirillov dimension equal to any real number greater than or equal to 2.
