Workshop

INFO: email R. Craigen
or A. Gumel
This is an annual training program for Manitoba students in the
Winnipeg area taking grade 10, 11 or 12 mathematics and wishing to
improve their performance in high school competitions, and schools
hoping to improve their ranking in the competitions. It is
designed as a a fun midwinter "mathematical retreat" spread over four
Saturdays, lunches provided, morning and afternoon problem
solving "labs" in which U of M mathletes mentor the younger students,
looking at a wide range of contest-style questions and developing a
toolkit of problem-solving tools and techniques. Each day
lunch is preceded by a dynamic speaker about some aspect of
mathematics, and is followed by a period of mathematical
recreation. Students compete against others in their grade in an
in-house competition, with prizes going on the last day to the top
three students in each grade level. Local high schools are
requested to send up to six students (preferably spread over all three
grades). In most years a nominal registration fee is charged,
which may be paid by the school or by the students' families.
Home schoolers wishing to register may contact us directly by
email. Sponsored by IIMS, U of M, Manitoba Hydro. See
the IIMS
Workshop page for further information.
Manitoba Math Camp
Held every year during the summer at the University of Manitoba, for
advanced students at the grade 9/10 level. Here is the
2009 information page.

FYI:
Manitoba Olympiad Training Program
This is a special training program for Manitoba students showing
aptitude for competing at the national or international level, piloted
in 2008. It is by invitation only, but serious queries may be
made to the organizers, R. Craigen and A. Prymak, at the University of
Manitoba. The program is not currently active, but will involve
mentoring and instruction of rising stars by past champion mathletes
and is run in conjunction with the national OLYMON
correspondence program.
