WORLD LOGIC DAY TALK
Foundations of Mathematics and Modern Algebra
Abstract:

In celebration of UNESCO World Logic Day, today (January 14), I'll give a rather rambling overview of the connections between work in the Foundations of Mathematics and work in modern algebra, very much influenced of course by my own personal experience.

There are three kinds of interactions:

  1. Foundational questions that impact the content and nature of our work in algebra directly;
  2. Applications of techniques from the various disciplines that make up the Foundations of Mathematics to problems in algebra;
  3. Applications of ideas and methods from modern algebra to foundational problems.

This talk is intended to be at least partly accessible to undergraduate students with some upper-year algebra courses and some exposure to foundations (mathematical logic, set theory).
