The Chow ring of a Grassmann variety
Abstract:

A Grassmannian is a parameter variety for subspaces (of a specified dimension) of a projective space. I will define these varieties, discuss their structure and introduce their intersection ring (or Chow ring). One can perform calculations in this ring to answer some interesting geometric questions. No prior acquaintance with algebraic geometry will be assumed.

Meanwhile, everyone is invited to try the following problem:

Given four randomly situated lines in (ordinary) space, how may lines can you find which intersect all four?
